Prog Rock Through One Woman's Lens

No photo for today’s entry. We’re finally at the tail end of the summer season. The sun’s starting to set a little sooner, and fall quarter is in full swing at the community college I work at. That’s what I do when I’m not blogging or making food. Tuesdays and Thursdays seem to be the schedule I’ve leaned towards for blog updates. I’m not sure why I decided on those days specifically, but it’s worked so far. Anyway, since I largely spend my work days alone in the evening, that leaves lots of opportunity to play some music while I work, unless of course, the phone rings or I’m in a meeting. Today, I finally decided to give Steven Wilson’s new album, The Overview, a listen. I’ll admit, I did kind of fall off the Steven Wilson bandwagon for awhile, with Hand. Cannot. Erase being the last album of his that I really liked start to finish. For me, while his subsequent albums have been good, they just don’t have the same…oomph, I guess… that I got from his earlier work. I’ll never chastise a musician or band for trying to take their work in new directions or for experimenting with other genres, which I know earned Wilson kind of a lot of pushback from fans in albums like THE FUTURE BITES. Nonetheless, I am me, and if he or anyone else wishes to try something different, they should go for it. It is called “progressive” music, after all. 🙂

And of course, I couldn’t complete a shift without listening to my beloved Marillion. I’ve made great use of of their VOD subscription service, The Space. For just £5.49 ($7.38) a month, I have access to all things Marillion: concert movies, documentaries, music videos, you name it, and completely without ads (Amazon Prime, hope you’re taking notes!). I obviously can’t watch while I’m working so I have the videos going in a separate tab and I just listen to the audio. It provides a wonderful ambience while I sort through the masses of student profiles and class schedules to make sure everything’s in tiptop shape.Still haven’t made it to a Marillion Weekend. Dreaming, dreaming, dreaming…
